What are some common reasons a citizen would join the marines?

I say marines because I am working on a story about the protagonist joining the USSMC (United States Space Marine Corps) and I need a reason for why he joined other than drafting. What are some common reasons a citizen would join the marine, or anything related to the military?

I’ve had some friends join the army, national reserve, navy and marines

1. Wanted to travel around the world
2. Wanted to get toughened up
3. They were interested in military firearms and other weapons
4. Pay for college
5. Were unhappy with life at home, didn’t have career in mind
6. Wanted to serve the country
7. Thought it would be cool to be a soldier/marine/air force pilot

usually either because they want to fight for their country, they can’t afford college, or their parents/guardians forced them too

its actually usmcs and im not even sure its a real branch of the marines. so i cant answer this horribly stupid and unthought out question. if you cant think of a reason to join the military, then you are one sad little person
